Three Security Personnel Killed in Incident Near NIPSS Kuru

Three security personnel lost their lives following a security incident that occurred in the early hours of Tuesday around the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, in Plateau State.

The Plateau State Police Command confirmed the incident in an information update issued on June 16, 2026, describing the development as unfortunate and noting that the affected personnel were on duty at the institute at the time.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Alfred Alabo, said security reinforcements had been deployed to the area while patrols were intensified on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, CP Bassey Ewah.
“Regrettably, three security personnel lost their lives during the incident,” the statement said.
The police assured residents that the situation had been brought under control and that normal activities had resumed in the area. The command also urged members of the public to remain calm and continue with their lawful activities.
Meanwhile, the management of NIPSS stated that the incident occurred in the vicinity of the institute and was swiftly contained through the prompt response of security personnel and relevant security agencies.
In a statement signed by the Head of Public Affairs Department, Dr Osime Samuel, the institute said there was no threat to the safety of participants, staff, residents or facilities, adding that academic and administrative activities were continuing as scheduled.
“The situation was promptly brought under control through the swift response of security personnel and relevant security agencies. There is currently no threat to the safety of participants, staff, residents, or facilities of the Institute, and normal activities are continuing as scheduled,” the statement read.
NIPSS noted that security agencies had commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident and cautioned against speculation, saying it could not verify information circulating on social media and other unofficial platforms.
The institute added that it was working closely with relevant authorities and would provide verified information as investigations progress.
Both the police and NIPSS said further updates would be communicated to the public in due course.
