The Honourable Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has described Nigeria’s ongoing education data transformation initiative as a defining national reform that signals a shift from policy discussion to system-wide implementation.
Speaking during an engagement on the Nigeria Education Data Infrastructure at the Federal Ministry of Education in Abuja, the Minister said the country may be entering a historic moment where decisions taken in governance “begin to echo across generations.”
He noted that the education sector is undergoing a major transition from fragmented analogue systems to a unified, automated, and data-driven structure capable of improving planning, accountability, and service delivery.
The meeting was attended by the Deputy Governor of Enugu State, Ifeanyi Ossai, the Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, representatives of UNICEF, scholars, diplomats, and other education stakeholders.
Tunji-Ojo commended the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, for driving what he described as a “bold and timely reform” aimed at strengthening national education planning and outcomes.
He also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his ability to deploy competent professionals across critical sectors, describing the leadership decision as impactful for long-term national development.
According to him, the new data infrastructure will help address longstanding challenges such as out-of-school children, inefficient resource allocation, and the need for measurable performance indicators in the education sector.
He further linked the initiative to broader governance reforms, noting that data-driven systems had already improved outcomes in the correctional service sector through rehabilitation programmes and reduced recidivism rates.
Tunji-Ojo added that strengthening data systems in education would enhance citizenship management, human capital development, and national security, describing education as the foundation for a knowledge-driven economy.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Ministry of Interior to support the Renewed Hope Agenda and other national reforms aimed at improving governance and public service delivery across Nigeria.
