Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni Sworn in for Seventh Term Amid Military Display, Succession Questions

President Yoweri Museveni has been sworn in for a seventh consecutive term, extending his nearly four decades in power as he continues his rule over the East African nation.

The 81-year-old leader took the oath of office on Tuesday in the Kampala suburb of Kololo, where thousands gathered to witness the inauguration ceremony and celebrate the continuation of his leadership.

Museveni, who has ruled Uganda since 1986, used his address to urge citizens to embrace hard work and wealth creation, stressing economic self-reliance for families across the country. “No more excuses,” he told the crowd.

The ceremony featured a large military parade, with Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, overseeing rehearsals in the days leading up to the inauguration. The display included flyovers by Russian-made Sukhoi fighter jets over the ceremonial grounds, underscoring the military tone of the event.

Museveni’s latest swearing-in has renewed discussions about political transition in Uganda, where many citizens have known no other leader. While his long rule has brought political stability for some, questions remain over how and when a leadership transition will eventually take place.

Attention has increasingly turned to succession dynamics, with observers closely watching the role of senior military and political figures as Uganda enters another five-year term under Museveni’s continued presidency.
