Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum on Wednesday directed the construction of a four-kilometer road network at the Federal Polytechnic in Monguno.

The governor additionally ordered that a building held by the Borno State Government be assigned to the polytechnic for use as a hostel.
Zulum instructed that the road be built in stages, with the first phase beginning in January 2024.

He gave the directive during a visit to the permanent site of the polytechnic, which is under construction in Monguno town.

“I have gone round the ongoing work here at the permanent site of the federal polytechnic, Monguno. One of the challenges I have observed is the lack of a road network; therefore, the Borno State Government will construct a four-kilometre road network in phases and, Insha Allah, the first phase will commence in January next year,” Zulum said.

While assuring continuous support to the polytechnic, Zulum commended the management of the polytechnic for their commitment towards the completion of the ongoing work at the permanent site of the institution.

The Borno State Government had earlier approved an intervention worth N100 million for the polytechnic, which included expansion works at a temporary site where the polytechnic currently operates, furniture, and housing accommodations for the principal officers as a take-off intervention.

Of the N100 million, Zulum released N50 million as a take-off grant in 2021 to assist the polytechnic in commencing academic activities.

Since 2019, the governor has provided support to federal institutions working in Borno, including interventions on housing and laboratory facilities for the University of Maiduguri and UMTH, approval of the release of N50 million and construction of staff houses for the Nigerian Army University, Biu, and allocation of a temporary site for the take-off of the Federal College of Education, Gwoza, among others.

Meanwhile, the governor has approved the release of N20 million to the Specialist Hospital Monguno for the hospital’s management to cater for the hospital’s immediate needs.

Zulum also ordered an incentive package to be distributed to all the staff who had reported to work at the time of his visit in order to motivate them.

The governor agreed that each senior staff member would receive N100,000 and food products, while each junior staff member would receive N50,000 and food items.

Zulum declared in 2019 that Monguno Hospital and Biu General Hospital would be upgraded to specialist status in order to provide specialised medical services to the rising population.
