2023: Borno CAN Chairman calls for religious tolerance, supports Muslim-Muslim ticket

As the 2023 General elections keep generating tensions among political and religious groups, the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Borno State, Bishop Mohammed Naga has called for religious tolerance among Nigerians.

 

The Bishop, who made the called while speaking at peace-building symposium organised by a non-governmental organization, Kalthum Foundation for Peace in collaboration with BRAVE IT in Maiduguri.

He also noted that there was nothing wrong with a Muslim-Muslim ticket.

In his words, “Nigeria doesn’t need a Christian-Christian or Muslim-Muslim leader. We want somebody who will take us out of our problems.”

 

According to him, if the Christians had wanted a Christian president, they would have voted for either Osinbajo or Amaechi during the primary elections.

 

On his part,  Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, criticized the country’s high level of socioeconomic unfairness and added that the Boko Haram insurgency and several other current security issues might have been avoided if the country had chosen discussion over the use of force. He, therefore, called for a complete overhaul of the nation’s security system.

Also speaking the Chairman of the occasion, Prof. Isa Marte Hussaini, said that while killing terrorists is occasionally necessary, dealing with youth unrest and other security-related concerns non-kinetically is often the best option.

 

In her remark the Chairperson of the Kalthum Foundation for Peace, Amb. Ummu Khalthum Muhammad,  thanked Prof. Ibrahim Umara, the symposium’s guest speaker, as well as all the panellists, participants, and Sheikh Gumi.

 

She stated that the symposium’s schedule would centre on the subject of peacebuilding through community engagement and that it will also include additional topics in order to cover all of the subject’s facets. She concluded by expressing hope that the symposium will provide for all and educate everyone.
