The Gombe Network of Civil Society (GONET) has extended warm congratulations to Alhaji Alhassan Yahaya on his recent election as the President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).

Yahaya emerged victorious during the 8th Triennial National Delegates Conference held in Owerri, Imo State, earning widespread praise for his dedication and commitment to journalism.

In a congratulatory letter signed by GONET Chairman, Ibrahim Yusuf, the coalition described Yahaya’s election as a testament to his competence and devotion to advancing the media profession and societal development.

“Your victory is a clear testament to your dedication, competence, and unwavering commitment to the advancement of journalism and humanity at large,” the letter read.

The group emphasised the critical role of investigative journalism in fostering accountability, transparency, and progress toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

It expressed confidence in Yahaya’s ability to lead the NUJ to new heights, championing press freedom, integrity, and development-focused journalism.

“As the NUJ President, we are confident that your visionary leadership will bolster the media’s role in ensuring a fair and informed society,” Yusuf stated.

GONET, a coalition committed to promoting good governance and sustainable development in Gombe State and beyond, pledged its readiness to collaborate with the NUJ to amplify marginalised voices and enhance civic engagement across Nigeria.

“GONET is open to collaborating with the NUJ at both the state and national levels to achieve our shared goals of promoting good governance, civic engagement, and sustainable development,” the letter added.

The organisation encouraged Yahaya to intensify efforts in fostering people-centered media policies and promoting human rights and accountability through investigative journalism.
