Speaking about her decision to contest the election, Iyabo stated that she has reached a stage in life where she can make independent choices regarding her career and political future. She emphasized that her candidacy is a personal decision, reflecting her readiness to lead based on her own vision and experience.
Reflecting on her family situation and age, Iyabo expressed gratitude for still having both parents alive, noting that many of her peers do not enjoy this privilege. “I don’t need his support; I’m almost 60. As you’re looking at me now, I’m 59, so I think that at this age—and I tell people at my age—my friends that still have both parents alive are very few. So I consider myself lucky at this age to have both my mother and father alive, and I don’t think at this age, I should be consulting them for everything with my career move. So what I’ve said I know, and my mother will vote for me; that’s all I ask of them,” she said.
Iyabo’s remarks highlight her determination to pursue political office on her own terms while appreciating the guidance and support of her family where appropriate.
