Sanwo-Olu Backs Deputy Governor Hamzat for Lagos Governorship Bid

The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has expressed strong support for his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, following his formal declaration of intention to contest the governorship of the state.

Sanwo-Olu disclosed that Dr. Hamzat personally informed him of his decision, describing the move as a continuation of a long-standing partnership built on trust and shared vision.

“We have worked closely for over 21 years, and I know his strength, his capabilities, and his steady commitment to the people of Lagos,” the governor stated.

He noted that Hamzat’s deep understanding of governance and socio-economic development, shaped under the leadership of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, positions him as a strong contender for the state’s top job.

Sanwo-Olu emphasised the strategic importance of Lagos, cautioning against what he described as “experimentation” in leadership, and expressed confidence in his deputy’s ability to sustain and build on existing progress.

“Lagos is too important to be left for experimenting. I have no doubt that with his values, he will continue to work tirelessly to make our state greater,” he added.

The endorsement signals early political alignment ahead of the next electoral cycle, as stakeholders begin to position for leadership succession in Nigeria’s commercial capital.
