E-Gates Go Live at Lagos Airport, Promising Faster Passenger Processing

Passengers arriving in Lagos are beginning to experience faster and more seamless immigration clearance following the introduction of electronic gates (e-gates) at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport.

The newly installed system allows travelers to scan their passports, complete facial recognition checks, and proceed through immigration without the traditional manual processing, significantly reducing waiting times.

Frequent travelers have welcomed the development, noting that long queues at arrival halls have long been a major concern at Nigeria’s busiest international gateway. The e-gates are expected to improve efficiency, enhance security through biometric verification, and align the airport with global aviation standards.

However, despite the rollout, awareness remains low among many passengers. Observers say a number of travelers still queue at manual counters, either unaware of the new system or unsure of how to use it.

Aviation stakeholders have stressed the need for increased public sensitisation, clearer signage within the airport, and staff support to guide passengers toward using the automated lanes.

The introduction of e-gates is part of broader efforts to modernise airport operations in Nigeria, improve passenger experience, and reduce congestion at key entry points.

Travel experts advise passengers to familiarise themselves with the process and ensure their travel documents meet requirements for automated clearance, as adoption of the system is expected to expand in the coming months.

The development is seen as a practical step toward saving travelers time, reducing stress, and improving overall efficiency in Nigeria’s aviation sector.
