Iraq Anti-Corruption Raids Trigger Viral Claims Over Cash, Gold Seizure

A sweeping anti-corruption operation in Iraq has sparked widespread attention following viral claims that authorities recovered $57 million in cash, 27 kilograms of gold and luxury items, including gold underwear, during a raid on the home of a member of parliament.

While Iraqi authorities have confirmed a nationwide crackdown targeting lawmakers, senior officials and other public office holders over alleged corruption, the specific claims regarding the reported seizure have not been officially confirmed.

The anti-corruption campaign has led to the arrest of dozens of suspects after their legal immunity was lifted, with Iraqi officials saying investigations will continue and court proceedings will be conducted publicly.

Reports circulating on social media allege that investigators recovered millions of dollars in cash, large quantities of gold and other luxury items from the residence of a lawmaker. However, Iraqi authorities have yet to release official evidence confirming those specific discoveries, and independent verification of the claims remains unavailable.

The crackdown forms part of Iraq’s broader effort to combat corruption and recover public assets, with officials describing the campaign as one of the country’s most significant anti-graft operations in recent years.
