Court Sentences Former Driver to Death for Murder of Elderly Couple in Abuja
A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has sentenced Jonathan Marcus to death by hanging for the murder of his former employer, 80-year-old Adebola Ezekiel, and his wife, Mrs. Abiodun Ezekiel.
The judgment was delivered on July 1, 2026, after the court found Marcus guilty of killing the couple at their residence in the Apo Legislative Quarters, Abuja, on April 1, 2024.
According to the FCT Police Command, investigations were launched after the bodies of the victims were discovered, leading to the arrest of the suspect in Obajana, Kogi State, where he had reportedly gone into hiding after the incident.
During interrogation, Marcus confessed to entering the couple’s residence at about 11:00 p.m. on the day of the attack and killing them.
Police investigations further revealed that the convict had previously worked as the couple’s driver but was dismissed following repeated disagreements with his employers.
The suspect was subsequently arraigned before the FCT High Court, where the prosecution presented evidence linking him to the crime.
Delivering judgment, Justice M. S. Idris held that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and convicted Marcus of the two counts of murder.
The court thereafter sentenced him to death by hanging.
Reacting to the judgment, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, said the conviction reflects the Command’s commitment to ensuring justice for victims of crime.
She reassured residents of the Federal Capital Territory that the police remain committed to protecting lives and property and bringing criminal offenders to justice in accordance with the law.
