NTA, China Movie Channel Forge Landmark Partnership to Advance Global South Broadcasting
The Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and China Movie Channel (CMC) have entered into a landmark partnership aimed at strengthening media cooperation, promoting cultural exchange and expanding opportunities for international film and television production between Nigeria and China.
The agreement, signed at the Chinese Cultural Centre in Abuja, is expected to create new opportunities for co-productions, technical training, knowledge sharing and the distribution of Nigerian and Chinese content to wider international audiences.
The collaboration comes amid expanding bilateral relations between Nigeria and China and represents a practical implementation of the people-to-people exchange objectives of the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).
Through the partnership, NTA is expected to leverage its extensive broadcasting network and infrastructure, while working with CMC to promote innovative production techniques, professional development and cross-border creative collaboration.
The initiative will also facilitate technical masterclasses, joint productions, international film screenings and greater exposure for filmmakers and creative professionals from both countries.
The agreement was formally signed by the Director-General of NTA, Salihu Abdulhamid Dembos, and the Editor-in-Chief of China Movie Channel, Cui Binzhen, during a ceremony attended by senior government officials and stakeholders in Nigeria’s media and creative sectors.
Among those present were the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai; Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, Abdulkarim Ozi Ibrahim; Deputy General Manager of China Intercontinental Press, Guan Hong; Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission, Charles Ebuebu; Director-General of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, Mohammed Bulama; Chairman of the Association of Nigerian Authors, FCT Chapter, Chukwudi Eze; and Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, FCT Chapter, Grace Ike.
The partnership is expected to deepen cultural understanding between Nigeria and China while creating new platforms for filmmakers, broadcasters, producers and other creative professionals to share ideas, skills and stories.
Beyond strengthening bilateral media relations, the initiative positions Nigeria and China to jointly explore new frontiers in broadcasting, digital technology and creative storytelling, with the potential to amplify African and Asian narratives on the global stage.
The landmark agreement marks a significant step towards transforming cultural and media diplomacy into practical opportunities for innovation, skills development and international collaboration across the Global South.
