By Comfort Pius, Jos

The Plateau State Government has inspected projects executed by the 17 local government councils to assess their quality, ensure prudent utilisation of public funds and ascertain the level of development at the grassroots.

The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Chief Ephraim Usman Gar, disclosed this on Thursday, November 5, 2026, during a press briefing at the Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, where he presented the report of the ministry’s statewide project inspection tour.

Gar said the exercise was designed to assess completed and ongoing projects initiated by the council chairmen, ensure that funds released to the local governments were judiciously utilised and ascertain whether the projects met the required standards.

He explained that the inspection was also aimed at strengthening collaboration among the state government, local government councils and traditional institutions to accelerate grassroots development.

According to him, the tour covered all three senatorial zones and the 17 local government areas, with officials of the ministry, the Special Adviser to Governor Caleb Mutfwang on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Jonathan Dabo, media representatives and civil society organisations participating in the exercise.

The commissioner expressed satisfaction with the performance of the council chairmen, saying the projects inspected reflected the administration’s commitment to taking governance closer to the people

“I am pleased to report that the 17 council chairmen have not disappointed the Time Is Now administration. Providing dividends of democracy at the grassroots remains the top priority of this administration,” he said.

Gar said the inspection commenced in the Southern Senatorial Zone, where the team assessed several projects, including the ongoing remodelling of youth centres, mini stadiums, computer-based test centres, legislative chambers, primary healthcare centres, motorised boreholes and housing estates for legislators.

Other projects inspected in the zone included solar-powered streetlights and the Wase Rock Radio and Television Station.

He added that the team also inspected facilities at the temporary headquarters of the 175 Infantry Motorcycle Battalion of the Nigerian Army, describing the council’s support for the facility as part of efforts to promote security and peace in the area.

In the Central Senatorial Zone, which covered Kanam, Kanke, Pankshin, Mangu and Bokkos local government areas, the team inspected the 23-kilometre Gugur Road construction project in Kanke, the remodelled Dengi Multipurpose Hall and primary healthcare centres.

Other projects inspected included the 1,500-capacity event hall in Mangu, a 200-capacity anatomy laboratory at Plateau State University, Bokkos, funded by the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), the Palace of the Ngolong Ngas and transformers provided for rural electrification.

In the Northern Senatorial Zone, comprising Bassa, Barkin Ladi, Jos East, Jos North, Jos South and Riyom local government areas, the inspection team visited primary healthcare centres, rural electrification projects, council secretariat complexes and information and communication technology centres.

Gar also listed ultra-modern markets at Rishari-Rutara and Zarakon, bridges linking Farin Gada to Rusau and Vwang to Kogot, police station outposts, as well as town halls in Kwang and Kuru, among the projects inspected.

He maintained that the projects executed across the 17 local government areas were people-oriented and reflected the development needs of the benefiting communities, in line with the vision of the Mutfwang administration.

The commissioner said the ministry would sustain its monitoring, technical assistance and advisory roles to ensure that local governments effectively discharge their statutory responsibilities.

He commended Governor Caleb Mutfwang for providing an enabling environment for the ministry and local government chairmen to discharge their responsibilities, while also appreciating the council chairmen, traditional institutions, media and civil society organisations for their participation in the inspection exercise.
