ADC Convention Draws Thousands to Abuja Amid Venue Controversy and Tight Security

By Matthew Eloyi

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Tuesday witnessed a vibrant show of unity and political momentum as no fewer than 3,000 delegates converged on the Rainbow Event Centre in the nation’s capital for its ongoing national convention.

Delegates, clad in colourful traditional and modern attire, streamed in from across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, transforming the venue into a mosaic of cultures and identities that underscored the party’s national reach and diversity.

The atmosphere, though festive, was marked by heightened security. Personnel conducted thorough checks at entry points, ensuring that only accredited participants gained access. Accreditation itself was meticulously handled by a sub-committee led by Austin Akobundu, reflecting the party’s effort to maintain order and credibility in its internal processes.

Speaking on the organisation of the event, the party’s National Organising Secretary, Chinedu Idigo, explained that delegate distribution was carefully structured. According to him, representation was based on the size of each state, a move designed to promote fairness and inclusiveness in decision-making.

However, beneath the orderly proceedings lies a controversy that has cast a shadow over the convention.

Idigo voiced frustration over what he described as significant obstacles in securing a suitable venue for the gathering. He alleged that multiple attempts to book prominent locations in Abuja were thwarted, with venue operators reportedly declining after learning the event was associated with the ADC.

Among the rejected options, he said, were Eagle Square and the Velodrome at the National Stadium, both of which either failed to respond or denied access without explanation. Private venues, including hotels and event centres, were also said to have withdrawn interest, citing fears of repercussions.

According to him, even the eventual host, the Rainbow Event Centre, initially attempted to cancel the booking following alleged external pressure but proceeded after the party insisted, having already made payment.

Idigo described the situation as troubling for Nigeria’s business environment, arguing that private enterprises should be able to operate without intimidation or political interference. He warned that such pressures not only undermine democratic processes but also inflict financial losses on business owners.

Despite the challenges, the convention is set to play a crucial role in shaping the party’s future. It is expected to conclude ongoing congresses, ratify a new party constitution, and lay the groundwork for upcoming primary elections.

For many observers, the large turnout and resilience in the face of logistical hurdles signal a party determined to assert its place in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
