Appeal Court upholds Sanwo-Olu’s victory

By Matthew Atungwu

The Court of Appeal, Lagos Division on Wednesday, upheld the All Progressives Congress candidate, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s victory in the March 18 governorship election.

The Lagos State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal dismissed the opposition PDP and Labour Party’s petitions to overturn Sanwo-Olu’s election on September 25. The appellate court upheld that decision.

The Independent National Electoral Commission declared Sanwo-Olu the winner with 762,134 votes.

LP’s Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour came second with 62,499 votes, while Olajide Adediran, alias Jandor, of the PDP, picked the rear with 62,499 votes.

The two distinct appeals that Jandor and Rhodes-Vivour filed were unanimously dismissed by a three-person appellate court panel, presided over by Justice Yargata Nimpar, for being without merit.

The other two panelists were Justices Samuel Bola and Paul Bassi.

Justice Nimpar held in the lead decision on Wednesday that Jandor lacked the authority to challenge the APC primary that resulted in Sanwo-Olu and his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, being chosen as the party’s flag-bearers.

The judge said, “The appellant was a meddlesome interloper in challenging the emergence of Messrs Sanwo-Olu and Hamzat at the primary exercise of their party, All Progressives Congress;  the appellant was neither an aspirant nor a member of the APC.
