A 24-year-old man in rural Yunnan Province, China, has received overwhelming support from strangers after inviting people online to attend his wedding because he had few family members to celebrate the occasion with him.
The young man, known online as “Xiaoxu,” from Yunfeng Village in Yiliang County, Zhaotong City, shared a video on October 25 inviting members of the public to his wedding scheduled for October 31.
He explained that he lost his father when he was three years old, while his mother remarried when he was five. He and his elder brother were subsequently raised by their grandmother, who also died two years later. The brothers grew up relying on each other and later worked different jobs to support themselves.
With only a few relatives available to attend his wedding, Xiaoxu said he feared the celebration would be too quiet. He initially hoped that a few strangers would respond to his invitation and help make the occasion lively.
However, his video quickly went viral, attracting thousands of people from different parts of China who volunteered to travel to the village to celebrate with him.
Reports from the area indicated that more than 2,000 people had arrived by October 28, with others still making plans to attend. Some guests brought gifts, including refrigerators, heating equipment and food items, while others provided cooking services, wedding decorations and vehicles for the couple.
One supporter reportedly offered a luxury Maybach car for the bride and groom, while volunteers helped organise the celebration and prepare meals for guests.
The response became so overwhelming that the original wedding venue was considered too small to accommodate the expected crowd. Local authorities therefore helped arrange a larger venue at a public square in Hengdianzi, Luowang Township, while coordinating traffic management, crowd control and food safety.
Xiaoxu said he had initially expected only about 10 to 20 people to respond to his invitation but was surprised by the nationwide show of support.
The story has attracted widespread attention online, with many people praising the kindness and generosity of strangers who came together to make the young couple’s wedding memorable.
