Court Jails Motorist for Assaulting FRSC Officers in Abuja

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has secured the conviction and sentencing of a motorist, Nasiru Usman, for assaulting road safety personnel while carrying out their lawful duties in Abuja.

The judgment was delivered on Thursday by an Asokoro Magistrate Court, where His Worship Oniyangi sentenced the defendant to two months imprisonment and ordered him to pay ₦300,000 compensation to the injured officers.

According to the FRSC, the conviction arose from an incident that occurred on June 9, 2026, at Dutse Alhaji, Abuja, where Usman was arrested for traffic violations, including failure to properly cover unstable materials being transported and dangerous driving.

Investigations revealed that after his truck was impounded, the defendant attempted to forcefully remove the vehicle from the FRSC impoundment facility. In the process, he allegedly attacked officers on duty and violently resisted lawful enforcement procedures.

The Corps disclosed that Usman used a stone to assault two FRSC Marshals, inflicting injuries that required immediate medical treatment.

Following his arrest and remand, the defendant was arraigned before the court, where evidence presented by the prosecution established his involvement in the assault, leading to his conviction and sentencing.

Reacting to the judgment, the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, commended the judiciary for the swift dispensation of justice, describing the ruling as a strong message that attacks on public officers carrying out lawful responsibilities will not be tolerated.

He said the judgment reaffirmed that assaults against enforcement personnel constitute serious offences against the state and would attract the full weight of the law.

The Corps Marshal reiterated FRSC’s commitment to professionalism, civility and respect for human rights during enforcement operations, but warned that acts of violence, intimidation, obstruction or assault against personnel would be firmly addressed.

He also urged motorists and members of the public to seek redress through established legal and administrative channels rather than resorting to aggression whenever disagreements arise during enforcement activities.

The FRSC maintained that protecting the safety of its personnel remains essential to effective road safety administration and the enforcement of traffic regulations across the country.
