DSS Releases Kaduna Herder Cleared of Terrorism Allegations, Approves ₦3 Million Compensation

The Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi, has ordered the release of a Kaduna-based farmer and livestock rearer, Nura Idris, after an internal investigation cleared him of alleged links to Boko Haram terrorists.

According to a statement issued by the DSS, Idris, a resident of Soba Local Government Area of Kaduna State, was arrested in June 2024 by another security agency in Suleja, Niger State, over suspected terrorist connections and was subsequently transferred to the custody of the Service for further investigation.

The DSS disclosed that a comprehensive review of the case found no evidence linking Idris to terrorism or any terrorist organisation. Following the findings, the Director-General directed his immediate release and approved a compensation package of ₦3 million to support his reintegration into society.

The Service also indicated that additional support would be provided to help him rebuild his livelihood and resume his farming and livestock activities.

Speaking after regaining his freedom, Idris expressed appreciation to the DSS leadership, describing the intervention as life-changing. He also commended the Service for the treatment he received while in custody and for ensuring that justice prevailed after the review of his case.

The DSS said the release is part of an ongoing initiative aimed at reviewing inherited and prolonged detention cases to ensure that innocent individuals are not unjustly deprived of their freedom.

According to the Service, more than 30 cases have so far been reviewed under the programme, resulting in the payment of over ₦300 million in compensation to persons found to have been wrongfully detained.

The review process has also led to the release and compensation of several individuals previously accused of having links with the Indigenous People of Biafra and other terrorist groups after investigations established their innocence.

The DSS noted that the initiative underscores its commitment to balancing national security responsibilities with the protection of citizens’ rights, while promoting fairness, accountability and public trust in Nigeria’s security institutions.
