Former Air Canada Pilot Arrested After Allegedly Flying Wide-Body Jets for 17 Years With Forged Licence

Canadian authorities have arrested a former Air Canada captain accused of flying commercial aircraft for nearly 17 years using a forged pilot licence, in what investigators describe as one of the most serious aviation credential fraud cases in recent years.

The suspect, Geoffrey Wall, was arrested on June 1, 2026 following a detailed investigation codenamed Project Icarus, led by Peel Regional Police. Authorities allege he operated more than 900 domestic and international flights without holding the required Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL), the highest certification required to command commercial passenger aircraft.

According to investigators, Wall possessed only a basic commercial pilot licence but allegedly falsified documents to secure command positions on wide-body aircraft, including Boeing 767, 777, and 787 jets. Reports indicate he earned nearly 3 million Canadian dollars over the period in question.

The fraud reportedly came to light in 2025 during a routine credential verification process at Toronto Pearson International Airport, where inconsistencies were discovered in his licensing records. This triggered a wider investigation that ultimately led to his arrest.

Peel Regional Police described the case as a grave breach of aviation trust, likening it to “a family doctor secretly performing brain surgery,” underscoring the severity of the alleged deception.

Air Canada confirmed that flight safety was not compromised, noting that pilots undergo regular competency and performance evaluations every six months. However, the airline stressed that proper licensing remains a critical layer of safety and regulatory compliance in commercial aviation.

Authorities have since charged Wall with seven offences, including fraud and possession of forged documents. He is expected to face court proceedings as investigations continue into how the alleged deception went undetected for years.

The case has raised broader questions about credential verification processes in the aviation industry and regulatory oversight mechanisms designed to ensure pilot authenticity and flight safety.
