From Nollywood to Navy: Grace Bassey Becomes U.S. Sailor and Citizen
Former Nollywood actress Grace Bassey, formerly known as Belinda Effah, has taken a bold step into a new chapter of her life by joining the United States Navy, a decision that has also granted her American citizenship.
The 33-year-old actress took to her social media platforms to share the remarkable achievement, posting a photo of herself in full Navy uniform. She expressed deep gratitude to God, her family, and supporters for their unwavering belief in her journey.
“Last week, I graduated from U.S. Navy boot camp as a Sailor and took the oath as a citizen of the United States,” Bassey wrote. “Nigeria raised me, America challenged me, and I stand today stronger and more determined than ever.
“Thank you to everyone who believed in me. This is just the beginning. In honour of my late father – Naval Cdr. Asido Bassey Effah.”
Before her enlistment, Bassey had publicly shared her decision to change her name from Belinda—meaning “beautiful serpent”—to Grace, following what she described as a spiritual transformation.
“God changed my name to Grace after a divine encounter,” she said, adding that the name change “reflects a personal rebranding, but not a change in her core values or identity.”
Bassey rose to prominence in Nollywood under her former name and starred in several acclaimed productions before stepping away from the film industry. Her enlistment in the U.S. military marks a powerful and inspiring turn in her life’s journey, reflecting courage, discipline, and a deep sense of purpose.
