In a strong endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration and the leadership in his home state of Katsina, Senator Abdulaziz Yar’adua has passed a vote of confidence, praising the bold economic decisions made so far and urging Nigerians to remain patient and supportive as the country navigates through its current challenges.

Speaking in a recently conducted exclusive interview with the OurNigeria News Crew, Senator Yar’adua, who represents Katsina Central Senatorial District and chairs the Senate Committee on Army, defended the president’s approach to economic reforms, particularly the removal of the fuel subsidy and efforts to stabilise the exchange rate.

“If I were president, I would do exactly what President Bola Tinubu is doing now,” Yar’adua said. “He has taken bold steps, such as removing fuel subsidies and stabilising the exchange rate—moves his predecessors couldn’t dare. These decisions were necessary, even if they were unpopular.”

The Senator described President Tinubu’s policies as “visionary and forward-thinking.” They reflect a deep commitment to steering Nigeria toward a more sustainable, market-driven economy. While acknowledging the hardship many Nigerians are currently facing due to inflation and increased cost of living, Yar’adua insisted that long-term benefits are on the horizon.

“I believe in his vision for a free-market economy. Nigerians need to be patient and support his policies. The economy will stabilise, and we’ll see the benefits in the long run,” he stated.

Yar’adua’s comments come amid growing public discourse around the impact of the subsidy removal and the depreciation of the naira, both of which have significantly affected household incomes and increased the cost of essential goods and services. However, the Senator believes that the reforms are unavoidable if Nigeria is to break free from decades of economic mismanagement and dependency.

He also commended the current Katsina State Government, led by Governor Dikko Umaru Radda, for aligning with national development priorities and working to improve the lives of citizens in the state through initiatives in security, education, and agricultural development. When asked if he’s likely to consider contesting for Governorship in the state again, he responded:

“No! Not at all. I have full confidence in the sitting governor. He has our support and that of the Elders of Katsina State. In Katsina, we are seeing a government that is responsive, focused, and working hand-in-hand with the Federal Government to deliver good governance. Governor Radda has been proactive, especially in the area of security and rural development,” Yar’adua said.

He noted that Katsina, which has battled persistent security challenges such as banditry and kidnappings, has made significant strides under the present administration. The state government’s community-focused security strategies and partnerships with federal security agencies, he said, are beginning to yield results.

As a retired military officer and a key voice on national security matters in the Senate, Yar’adua also emphasised the importance of continued investment in military capacity and intelligence coordination, both of which he says the Tinubu administration has prioritised.

“The Tinubu government understands that no economy can thrive without security. We are seeing improvements in the supply of equipment and welfare for troops. These are signs of a government that is serious about protecting lives and property,” he added.

Yar’adua also used the opportunity to call for unity and political maturity among Nigerians, urging citizens to rise above ethnic and religious sentiments in their assessment of governance. He appealed for collective sacrifice and national cooperation to ensure the success of current reforms.

“This is not the time for division or blame. It is time for shared responsibility. Everyone has a role to play—leaders, citizens, civil society, and the private sector,” he noted.

His endorsement is expected to carry significant weight, not only due to his family legacy—being the younger brother of the late President Umaru Musa Yar’adua—but also due to his reputation for integrity and his increasing influence in the Senate.

As Nigeria continues to navigate through turbulent economic waters, voices like Senator Yar’adua’s reflect a broader conversation about reform, sacrifice, and the long road toward national transformation. Whether or not the public heeds his call for patience remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the stakes are high, and the path to stability requires both bold leadership and public trust.
