Tinubu Nominates Joseph Tegbe as Minister of Power Amid Sector Overhaul Push

By Matthew Eloyi

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated Mr Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe as Nigeria’s new Minister of Power, pending confirmation by the Senate, in a move aimed at strengthening ongoing reforms in the country’s struggling electricity sector.

This is contained in a statement issued on Thursday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.

According to the statement, the nomination was formally transmitted to the upper legislative chamber for screening and confirmation, in line with constitutional requirements.

The development follows the resignation of the former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, who stepped down from office to pursue elective political ambitions.

According to the statement, Mr Tegbe, an indigene of Oyo State, brings more than 35 years of experience spanning both the public and private sectors, with a strong background in fiscal policy, economic reform, and institutional development. He is widely regarded as a governance and advisory expert with significant exposure to large-scale reform programmes.

Before his nomination, Tegbe served as Senior Partner and Head of Advisory Services at KPMG Africa, where he led projects focused on fiscal reforms, regulatory restructuring, and institutional transformation across multiple sectors. He has also provided advisory support to government agencies and private organisations on investment structuring and policy implementation.

At the time of his nomination, he was serving as Director-General and Global Liaison for the Nigeria–China Strategic Partnership (NCSP), a platform tasked with strengthening bilateral cooperation between Nigeria and China, particularly in alignment with the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) framework.

According to the State House, Tegbe’s experience includes engagements within the power sector, especially in regulatory and institutional reform processes involving agencies such as the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Company (NBET).

The presidency expressed confidence that his appointment would reinforce ongoing efforts to improve grid stability, accelerate sector reforms, and attract sustainable investment into Nigeria’s electricity value chain under the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

President Tinubu is expected to mandate the nominee, upon Senate confirmation, to drive reforms aimed at improving power supply reliability and delivering better outcomes for households and businesses across the country.
