The United States and Australia will battle for a place in the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Friday, while Brazil will be looking to revive their campaign when they take on Haiti after a disappointing start to the tournament.

With co-hosts Mexico already securing qualification for the last 32 following a 1-0 victory over South Korea on Thursday, both the United States and Australia know that victory in their Group D clash in Seattle will guarantee progression to the next round.

The Americans head into the encounter full of confidence after opening their campaign with an impressive 4-1 victory over Paraguay in Los Angeles.

The convincing win has boosted belief within the squad led by Mauricio Pochettino, with growing support from home fans as they prepare for one of the group’s decisive fixtures.

Australia are equally buoyant following their surprise 2-0 victory over Turkey in their opening match.

The build-up to Friday’s encounter has featured a war of words after comments from a US pundit suggested Australia would be an easy opponent. The remarks have drawn attention in Australia, prompting Socceroos coach Tony Popovic to insist his side would answer critics on the pitch.

“We know that we want to earn our respect. We know that by our performances we can put Australian football on the world map, and that’s what we aim to do,” Popovic said.

Meanwhile, five-time world champions Brazil are targeting their first victory of the tournament when they face Haiti.

Brazil were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw by Morocco in their opening match, a result that drew criticism from supporters and pundits alike.

Defender Gabriel Magalhães admitted the team failed to meet expectations but said the squad was fully focused on improving.

“We know that we didn’t have a good first match, but what we can expect from us is that we’ll be really committed and do our best to win,” he said.

Head coach Carlo Ancelotti confirmed that changes would be made to the starting line-up, stressing the importance of resilience during a World Cup campaign.

Elsewhere, Scotland will face Morocco hoping to move closer to a historic first-ever appearance in the World Cup knockout rounds after opening their campaign with a 1-0 victory over Haiti.

Scotland captain Andy Robertson said the squad is determined to make history for the nation.

“We want to be the first team to be able to do that for our country,” Robertson said.

Off the field, Morocco’s preparations have been overshadowed by confirmation from a French court that captain Achraf Hakimi will face trial over allegations dating back to 2023. Hakimi has denied the accusation and welcomed the decision, saying he has been waiting for the opportunity to present his case.

Meanwhile, Iran has announced plans to lodge a complaint with FIFA over travel restrictions affecting the team’s movement during the tournament.

Iranian officials said requests to travel from their training base in Mexico to Los Angeles ahead of Sunday’s match against Belgium were denied, while US authorities maintained that arrangements had been communicated in advance.

With knockout qualification at stake and several teams seeking to build momentum, Friday’s fixtures are expected to play a significant role in shaping the next phase of the tournament.
