Troops of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) have rescued 10 National Examinations Council (NECO) candidates and teachers abducted during an attack by suspected ISWAP terrorists on Lassa Community in Askira Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.
The attack occurred at about 9:00 a.m. on Monday, June 29, 2026, when the terrorists stormed the Technical Secondary School while students were writing their NECO examinations.
According to military authorities, troops immediately launched a coordinated search-and-rescue operation, with the Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI deploying strike aircraft and Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) platforms to support ground forces.
Guided by aerial surveillance, troops made contact with the fleeing terrorists around Daggu, leading to a fierce gun battle.
The military said the operation resulted in the successful rescue of 10 victims, all of whom were unharmed and are currently receiving necessary care and support. Efforts are ongoing to rescue the remaining abducted victim and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
During the operation, troops overpowered the terrorists, inflicted casualties on the fleeing insurgents and recovered seven motorcycles believed to have been used during the attack, disrupting their escape.
However, the military disclosed that one soldier of Operation HADIN KAI and a member of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) lost their lives during the exchange of gunfire.
The Theatre Command described their sacrifice as a demonstration of courage, patriotism and unwavering commitment to protecting innocent civilians and restoring peace in the North-East.
Military authorities said troops, in collaboration with other security agencies and relevant stakeholders, have intensified operations across the affected area while reinforcing security around vulnerable communities and schools to prevent similar attacks.
The command noted that the incident reflects the desperation of terrorist groups facing sustained military pressure, adding that attacks on schools and other soft targets would not weaken ongoing counter-terrorism operations.
Operation HADIN KAI reaffirmed its commitment to protecting civilians, securing educational institutions and dismantling terrorist networks across the North-East.
The military also urged members of the public to remain vigilant, continue providing credible intelligence to security agencies and disregard unverified reports, relying only on official updates regarding ongoing operations.
