The Nasarawa State Police Command has confirmed the abduction of three students of the Federal University of Lafia (FULafia) from an off-campus hostel located along Awe Road, near the institution’s temporary campus in Akunza, Lafia.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel, said the incident occurred after the command received a distress call at about 9:21 p.m.
According to him, the armed men reportedly knocked on the door of the students’ residence before forcing their way into the building and abducting the occupants.
“What happened was that the students were at home when the gunmen arrived. They knocked on the door and gained entry,” Nansel said.
He explained that the hostel is situated in a secluded area behind the university’s temporary campus, close to a high-tension power line and a bush path leading towards Awe town.
Describing the location as vulnerable, Nansel advised students to avoid living in isolated areas, urging them to consider sharing accommodation in safer locations.
“That place is close to the bush. There is a gate there; whether you push it with your foot or your hand, it will open. It’s not an ideal place for anyone to live. People are looking for cheap accommodation. Instead of living alone, they should pool resources together and rent safer accommodation,” he added.
The police spokesperson disclosed that one of the abducted students has since been rescued, while efforts are ongoing to secure the release of the remaining two victims.
He said the Commissioner of Police in Nasarawa State, CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed, has ordered the immediate deployment of tactical teams and patrol operatives to the area to intensify search-and-rescue operations.
According to the command, security personnel are combing the surrounding forests and adjoining communities as part of efforts to apprehend the kidnappers and rescue the remaining students unharmed.
The police assured residents and members of the university community that every available resource is being deployed to ensure the safe return of the victims and bring those responsible for the abduction to justice.
