NASENI Seeks to Cut Solar Imports, Boost Local Production Through New Partnership with REA

The Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure, Dr. Khalil Halilu, has disclosed that Nigeria spent more than N400 billion importing solar products in 2025 and over N200 billion on similar imports so far in 2026.

Halilu said the figures highlight the urgent need to strengthen local manufacturing capacity and reduce the country’s dependence on imported renewable energy products.

Speaking on a new collaboration between NASENI and the Rural Electrification Agency, he noted that the initiative is aimed at promoting locally manufactured solar solutions and closing the nation’s production gap in the renewable energy sector.

According to him, the partnership, supported by the Bureau of Public Procurement, will see NASENI supply locally produced solar technologies for REA’s electrification projects across the country.

“Today, NASENI and REA, with the support of the Bureau of Public Procurement, took another step towards changing this narrative,” Halilu said.

He explained that the initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Nigeria First Policy, which prioritises local production, industrial development and the patronage of made-in-Nigeria goods and services.

Under the arrangement, locally manufactured solar products will be deployed in rural electrification projects, reducing reliance on foreign imports while encouraging domestic production.

Halilu said the long-term objective is to stimulate industrial growth, create employment opportunities and strengthen Nigeria’s energy security through homegrown technological solutions.

“Our goal is to reduce imports, create jobs and strengthen Nigeria’s energy security,” he stated.

Industry stakeholders have described the partnership as a significant step towards deepening local content participation in the renewable energy sector and accelerating access to sustainable electricity in underserved communities across the country.
