The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has called on legal officers of the Commission to demonstrate greater diligence, accuracy, and professionalism in the preparation of charges and court applications.
Olukoyede gave the charge in Abuja at the opening of a three-day intensive training programme for EFCC legal officers held at the EFCC Academy. He was represented by the Director of Legal and Prosecution Department, Sylvanus Tahir (SAN).
The EFCC Chairman stressed that meticulous case preparation remains a critical pillar in securing successful prosecutions and sustaining public confidence in the Commission’s operations.
According to him, the training programme is a strategic initiative designed to align with the Commission’s operational goals, noting that strengthening the capacity of legal officers across EFCC Commands nationwide is essential to ensuring cases are handled with competence and professionalism.
The training, titled “Training Programme for Legal Officers on Preparation, Dealing with Appeals in Financial Crimes and Allied Matters, Evidence Gathering and Trial Preparation,” focused on enhancing participants’ expertise in charge drafting, handling appeals, gathering admissible evidence, and thorough trial preparation.
Addressing participants, Olukoyede urged active engagement, emphasizing the practical nature of the sessions.
“You are supposed to participate actively because it is a participatory event. Don’t allow the presenters to just present their papers and go—engage them. These are live issues we deal with in court daily; it is not abstract,” he said.
Participants drawn from various EFCC Commands are expected to leverage the knowledge gained to improve the quality of prosecutions, reduce procedural errors, and strengthen justice delivery in financial crime cases.
The initiative underscores the Commission’s commitment to continuous professional development and institutional capacity building in the fight against economic and financial crimes in Nigeria.
