The House of Representatives has adopted the report of its Committee on Police Affairs on the Nigerian Police Trust Fund (Repeal and Re-Enactment) Bill, 2026, marking a significant step toward strengthening the country’s security architecture.
The proposed legislation seeks to replace the existing 2019 framework with a more robust structure aimed at ensuring sustainable funding for police operations across Nigeria.
Lawmakers said the reform is designed to improve training systems, enhance welfare packages, and strengthen the operational capacity of officers under the Nigeria Police Force.
The bill also focuses on modernising policing infrastructure, expanding capacity-building programmes, and ensuring more efficient utilisation of resources to address emerging security challenges.
According to the House, the initiative reflects growing concerns over funding gaps in security management and the need to equip law enforcement agencies with modern tools and improved working conditions.
If eventually passed into law, the new framework is expected to reposition the Police Trust Fund as a more effective instrument for long-term investment in policing, training, and operational readiness nationwide.
