Nigeria Police Repatriate Chinese Fugitive Over $245m Fraud Case

The Nigeria Police Force has successfully arrested and repatriated a Chinese fugitive, Xu Qing, to the People’s Republic of China over his alleged involvement in a large-scale financial fraud scheme valued at over $245 million.

The operation was carried out through the INTERPOL National Central Bureau Abuja following a formal request from Chinese authorities, who had declared the suspect wanted in Beijing for allegedly orchestrating an illegal deposit-taking scheme linked to a Ponzi operation.

Investigations revealed that Xu Qing fled China to Nigeria on November 5, 2024, in a bid to evade arrest. A warrant for his arrest was subsequently issued on November 12, 2025, by the Shinan Sub-Bureau of Qingdao Public Security.

Acting on credible intelligence and sustained surveillance, police operatives tracked and apprehended the suspect at a factory in Ogun State on April 24, 2026. He was later repatriated to China on April 28, 2026, under existing bilateral policing arrangements to face prosecution.

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to strengthening international collaboration in tackling transnational organised crime.

He also urged Nigerian businesses and employers to carry out proper background checks, including verification through law enforcement agencies, before engaging foreign nationals.

The Police reiterated their resolve to ensure that Nigeria does not serve as a safe haven for criminal elements, emphasizing continued vigilance in combating cross-border crimes.
