FG Evacuates 282 Nigerians from South Africa Amid Rising Xenophobic Attacks

The Federal Government has continued the evacuation of Nigerians from South Africa following renewed xenophobic attacks and hostilities, with 282 returnees arriving safely in Lagos on Thursday evening.

The returnees, who arrived aboard an Air Peace flight at about 7:30 p.m., represent the largest single batch of Nigerians evacuated since the government commenced the free airlift programme.

The evacuation exercise was initiated to assist Nigerians willing to return home following attacks and threats reportedly carried out by various non-state actors in parts of South Africa.

The latest group of evacuees was accompanied by two officials from the Nigerian Mission in South Africa, who supervised the process and ensured the safe return of the affected citizens.

The Federal Government has maintained that the evacuation programme is part of its commitment to protecting the lives and welfare of Nigerians abroad during periods of crisis.

Meanwhile, another batch of Nigerian returnees is expected to arrive in the country on Saturday as the evacuation exercise continues.
