Senator Buba Dumps APC for PRP Ahead of 2027 Polls

By Ahmed Ahmed

Sen. Shehu Buba Umar, representing Bauchi South Senatorial District in the National Assembly, has officially resigned from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and joined the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) in what political observers describe as a major development ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The senator announced his defection on Sunday, saying his decision was informed by what he described as the absence of internal democracy, unfair treatment of party loyalists, and the marginalisation of genuine members within the APC.

In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Communication, Comrade Sabo Mohammed, the lawmaker said he took the decision after wide consultations with political associates, women and youth groups, stakeholders, and supporters across Bauchi South and other parts of the state.

According to Senator Shehu Buba Umar, the PRP offers a platform rooted in justice, transparency, accountability, inclusiveness, and people-oriented leadership in line with democratic principles enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution.

He stated that his movement to the PRP was aimed at strengthening democratic governance, protecting the interests of ordinary citizens, and ensuring responsive representation for the people of Bauchi State.

The senator stressed that Nigeria’s democracy could only flourish where political parties promote fairness, equal opportunities, and active participation of members in decision-making processes.

He further called on patriotic leaders to unite in addressing poverty, unemployment, insecurity, and economic hardship confronting the country.

“Our people deserve leadership that listens to their concerns and improves their living conditions,” he stated.

Senator Shehu Buba Umar also pledged continued commitment to youth empowerment, education, healthcare delivery, agriculture, infrastructure development, women empowerment, and community security.

Political analysts believe the defection may significantly reshape political alignments in Bauchi State and strengthen opposition politics ahead of the 2027 elections.
